Draw a 500 mile radius around where you live. Research all of the small & mid-level venues in that area. If you are in the eastern Midwest or East Coast, there will be tons. Start with the venues closest to you and then try to get gigs further out. Go to open mic nights and talk to musicians and whoever is in charge at the venue if you can. Make friends and swap gigs. With the 500 mile radius, once you build up a venue list and perform at them, it gives you the potential of having a regular weekend touring circuit. Then you build outward from there.
